Philadelphia Phillies: De-boning The Fish

Tonight the Philadelphia Phillies scaled the Marlins in a 5-0 shut out by hands of Kyle Kendrick.  Kendrick pitch 6 scoreless innings to gain his 10th win of the season while only allowing 4 hits, 5 BB and striking out 4 batsmen.  Chad Durbin came in in the 7th inning only allowing 1 hit over 2 innings with the game being finished off by Ryan Madson pitching another hitless and scoreless inning in the 9th.

The Phillies’ offense were able to accrue 9 hits and 5 walks including Ryan Howard’s 32nd homerun of the season tying him with Adam Dunn for MLB most HR’s of the year to date.  Mike Cervenak had his first major league hit tonight as well as his first RBI.  The Phils had 5 doubles hit tonight as well as Eric Bruntlett’s 9th stolen base of the year.

The Phightins will meet up at the bank tomorrow to close the door on the Marlins as Cole Hamels takes the mound in search of his 10th win.  Hamels (3.37 ERA) has struggled as of late, but intends to right the ship against the Fish’s Chris “farfignugen” Volstad (3.25 ERA).  The Phillies will then roll right into the series against the Bucs for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Series.

State Of The Union – Myers, Happ, Utley, Eaton and Manny

The Phillies starting pitcher turned bullpen help Adam Eaton was demoted yesterday to AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.  This comes off of a 2 inning mess on Sunday against the Braves that he allowed 3 runs with 2 of them being longballs.  Eaton was recently demoted into the bullpen hoping he could at least fill a need for a right handed long reliever, but he was unable to come into a game and shut down the opponent.  He was pulled into Manuel’s office after the game and gracefully bowed out as Brett Myers had recently done.  Adam will be placed into the starting rotation at Lehigh Valley and according to Ruben Amaro Jr. he will be shuffled around the Phillies affiliate teams in order to stay localized in case he needs to be called up.

J.A. Happ is being called up to the Phillies once again, but it has not yet been determined whether he will be placed into the starting rotation or as a reliever.  Brett Myers has a start tomorrow against the Washington Nationals which could determine if he is to remain in the starting rotation or be moved to the bullpen and replaced by Happ.

The trade rumors surrounding Manny Ramirez coming to Philadelphia has been down played by the Phillies organization.  It has been documented that the Phillies and the Mets have both contacted Boston in regards to trading Manny for their respective ball clubs.  The Mets do not have what it takes in trades to be able to get Manny and they are not even sure if they are willing to take the chance on disrupting the club house.  Pat Gillick had stated that the Phillies currently do not have a position open for Manny considering that they currently have Pat Burrell in left field.  I would assume that Manny would at least remain in Boston for the rest of the year considering how much his salary commands from an organization.

Chase Utley has been having some soreness in his right hip according to Ruben Amaro Jr. and David Montgomery.  However, Utley has down played the injury stating that his soreness has nothing to do with his issues surrounding the recent hitting slump.  I would not expect Chase to be placed on the D.L., but you may see him get pulled out of games if they have a comfortable lead in order to rest his hip and get Eric Bruntlett some playing time.

Philadelphia Phillies – MVP Attitude

The saying lead by example does not come to mind when speaking of Jimmy Rollins recently.  Rollins was benched again today in the final series against the New York Mets.  Jimmy missed the team bus to Shea and decided to drive himself, but the traffic and lights hindered his transit.  Rollins did not make it to Shea until 1 hr prior to the game start.  He was quickly summoned to the Manager’s office and scratched off of today’s line-up.  Jimmy was replaced by the hard working Eric Bruntlett that went 3-4 with 2 doubles.  Bruntlett covered the short stop position for the reigning MVP while he was injured earlier in the year.  Other than having a rough 1st outing Bruntlett has proven himself worthy to fill the shoes of some of the most difficult positions on the field.

Rollins is not new to contraversy when he was benched on June 5th by Charlie Manuel for failure to run out a routine fly ball that dropped.  Jimmy was also questioned recently about his strolling run into 3rd base that may have resulted in a run scoring if he would have given Steve Smith (3rd Base Coach) some hustle.  This is another report that Jimmy see differently than the coaching and managing staff.

I’m not sure what city Jimmy thinks that he is playing for, but he has been highly disappointing this year with his lack of production and more importantly his “MVP” attitude.

Philadelphia Phillies – Moyer Hung Out To Dry

The Philadelphia Phillies lost again tonight against the Oakland Athletics in a 5-2 final.  Jamie Moyer pitched an exceptional 1 hit game up to the 6th inning.  He then proceeded to drop another 4 hits in the 6th inning with 1 of those hits being a 3 run homerun.  So, you ask yourself why would would Charlie Manuel allow a 45 year starter who probably pitched some of the best 5 innings of his career to continue?  The Phillies Bullpen is well rested and they also rank # 1 in the Majors for ERA.  The Phillies need a win bad to break through this slump and though Moyer pitched well he is no Cole Hamels with longevity.  Tonight’s DH was Geoff Jenkins since Charlie had another one of his mystical feelings that he was going to do well with his .244 batting average.  Hey Charlie, Here’s a news flash – Jenkins went o-4 tonight . . .

In addition to the need for starting pitching and a lefty in the bullpen, I hope the Phils are looking to improve upon their catching and right field position.  Carlos Ruiz and Geoff Jenkins are just not playing to the level needed to move us into World Series contention.  I will not reiterate my thoughts on So Taguchi, but I do feel that they are under utilizing Eric Bruntlett.  The Phightins have dropped 6 games in a row and somehow they remain in 1st place in the N.L. Eastern Division.  That says a lot about our competition this year.  Non-Existent . . . . .

Tonight Kyle Kendrick (5.06) takes the mound against Oakland’s Greg Smith (3.51) in hopes of accrueing his 7th win and the Phillies 1st win in 6 games.

Philadelphia Phillies – Hamels Shuts Down Big Red Machine

The Philadelphia Phillies take 3 of 4 games in the series with the Cincinatti Reds at Citizen Bank Park.  Cole Hamels shoned once again like a diamond in the rough.  He pitched a complete game shut out against the Big Red Machine with only 3 hits accrued with a final score of 5-0.  The offense was lacking again today with 5 runs scored on 5 hits with one being a solo blast from Geoff Jenkins.  Jimmy Rollins was benched today in the 3rd inning by Charlie Manuel for failure to run out a routine pop-up which lead to an error and stranded Jimmy on 1st instead of 2nd base.  Eric Bruntlett was his replacement whom was able to get on base and later score due to Ken Griffey Jr.’s dropped ball in right field.  The Cincinnati Reds earned 3 errors today which puts them in 3rd place with 47 total errors in the N.L. while being tied with the Pittsburg Pirates for the 2nd worst fielding pct.  The Phillies are headed off to their 9 game road trip which they will play the Braves, Marlins, and the Cardinals before returning home to face the Boston Red Sox for inter-league play.  Go Phightins !!
